On Friday, Aug. 29, the ACR issued a strong statement expressing deep concern over recent developments at the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) that could threaten the integrity of science-based public health policy.
At issue is the dismissal of members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a group historically responsible for ensuring that immunization schedules reflect scientific consensus and prioritize vulnerable populations. The ACR warned that replacing these experts with individuals whose views diverge from established medical science could jeopardize the future of vaccine policy in the United States. The ACR also emphasized that any deviation from science-driven recommendations could put patients at serious risk.
Adding to the concern is the sudden termination of Susan Monarez, PhD, CDC Director, just weeks after her confirmation. The ACR is calling for transparency around:
- The rationale and process behind the ACIP dismissals;
- The implications for immunization guidance, especially for immunocompromised populations;
- The circumstances surrounding Dr. Monarez’s removal; and
- The qualifications required for her successor to ensure adherence to peer-reviewed science.
“Excluding medical experts from advisory roles undermines public health, erodes trust in our nation’s health institutions, and puts patients at risk,” the statement reads.
The ACR continues to advocate for vaccine policies grounded in clinical evidence and peer-reviewed research and urges policymakers to uphold transparency and scientific integrity in all public health decisions.
